How to Store Matcha and Keep it Fresh for Longer

Ceremonial grade Matcha is full health benefits for the mind & body and has a slightly sweet delicate flavour when consumed fresh. However, if not stored correctly, Matcha can quickly lose its flavour in days and degrade the healthy nourishing compounds and antioxidants it offers!

Matcha is sensitive to: heat, oxygen, moisture and light.

These factors will start the oxidation process which will result in the Matcha losing its vibrant green colour, taste and most importantly, start losing its nutrient content.

We recommend keeping Matcha in an air-tight vessel such as a sealed pouch or a tin with a secure lid. Do make sure that the pouch or tin is not transparent or glass as this will allow light to affect your Matcha. Store this is a dark, cool and dry environment such as the kitchen cabinets which is out of direct sunlight.

How about the fridge or freezer?

We don't recommend placing Matcha in the fridge because Matcha can easily absorb the odours and flavours of the fridge. We definitely don't want your prized Matcha to end up smelling like garlic or whatever might be sitting in the fridge.

When you remove Matcha from the fridge for use, moisture due to condensation can form as your Matcha will be colder than the room it is in. So unless you live in a very hot climate, there is no need to place it in the fridge.

If you must keep it is the fridge, we recommend to place the pouch or tin in another container before storing it in the fridge. When taking it out of the fridge, allow the container to get to room temperature first before using it.

Our top Matcha Storing Tips:

1. Use an air-tight vessel such as a sealed pouch or tin.

2. If using a sealable pouch, squeeze out any air in your pouch before resealing.

3. Store the Matcha away from windows.

4. Consume your Matcha within 2 months after opening for the best results.

5. If unopened, keep your Matcha in a cool dry spot for up to 18 months.

6. Buy Ceremonial Grade Matcha in smaller quantities to ensure you use it up in time. 50 grams is a good size, lasting you roughly three to four weeks if you plan on preparing Matcha daily.
