FAQs: Bamboo whisk (Chasen)
▶ Must I use a bamboo whisk (chasen) to dissolve my Matcha?
A chasen is the simplest and most effective way to whisk out clumps, evenly blend the matcha with hot water and create a uniform layer of foam. The many tines/teeth/bristles are designed to do this. A fork, whisk or electric frother may work to some extent but just isn't designed to do the same job as a traditional chasen.
▶ What should I do before using my bamboo whisk (chasen)?
Before use, soak the chasen in a bowl of warm water for about a minute or two. This helps the tines unfurl and softens them. When whisking your matcha, softer elastic tines improves blending and creates a rich foam layer on top.
▶ How do I use a bamboo whisk (chasen)?
The chasen should be used to whisk the matcha in a delicate W or M motion, using mostly the movement in your wrists. Try to avoid hitting and scraping the sides of the bowl with the chasen as this can quickly damage the tines.
▶ How should I clean my bamboo whisk (chasen)?
Clean immediately after use! Try not not let it sit with the powder residue for too long. Use warm water (No soap needed) to rinse the tines after use and make sure no powder is left on it.
▶ Can I use the dishwasher and soap to clean bamboo?
Nope 🙅🏽♀️ Hand wash only with warm water.
▶ How do I dry and store my bamboo whisk (chasen)?
After cleaning, gently shake off excess nature and let it air dry. Do not stand it up when drying as water can get trapped inside the handle and mold can form.
A whisk holder (kusenaoshi) is the best drying and storing tool for your chasen. It helps to retain the shape and helps to prevent moisture getting trapped in the inner handle. Store in a cool dry place once the chasen in completely dry.
▶ Mold has formed on my whisk!!!!! What should I do?
Oh no! We recommend discarding it. Unfortunately when you try and scrub it off or soak the chasen to remove the mold, this can really damage the bamboo.
▶ When is it time to replace my bamboo whisk (chasen)?
When the tines are very damaged and no longer whisking the matcha evenly it is time to part ways with your chasen. If mold forms, we also recommend replacing your chasen. Proper care will help to prolong the life of your chasen.
