FAQ: Matcha & Hojicha

How is Ceremonial Grade Matcha different to regular matcha powders?

Ceremonial grade is the highest grade of matcha available. It is produced from the delicate baby leaves of the first harvest which contain the highest amount of nutrients and tends to be more subtly sweet in flavour. These tea leaves receive the least amount of sunlight, thus containing higher concentrations of chlorophyll for an intense green colour and contain higher levels of L-theanine for a sweeter taste. Compare this to culinary grade matcha which tends to have a more robust bitter taste and a lower chlorophyll content. Both are great for consumption but for different use cases. For more information, see blog discussion.

Are all Ceremonial Grade Matcha's the same?

No. There are many things to consider that can affect the nutrition and taste. Depending on where it is grown, the time of the year it is grown, the shading process of the tea leaves and the processing stages. We have selected out ceremonial grade matcha based on quality, taste and consistency.

How much caffeine does Matcha have?

This will depend on how much matcha powder you use. As a rough guide, a 2g serving (1 teaspoon or 2 matcha scoops) contains about 70-80mg caffeine. Your average flat white with 2 shots of coffee contains about 80-120mg caffeine. A steeped green tea bag contains about 25mg of caffeine.

The caffeine in matcha is paired with a high amount of L-theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid found in tea leaves. It is higher in matcha thanks to the shading process involved when growing the tea. This helps to sustain your energy boost without the jitteriness and crash you may experience when having other sources of caffeine.

Can I drink Matcha in the evenings?

If you are sensitive to caffeine, we recommend drinking matcha in the first half of your day as the caffeine in matcha can stay in your body for 8-10 hours. However,  matcha has stress and anxiety relieving properties which may also help with falling asleep at night.

If you find that a late night matcha is affecting your sleeping quality, reserve it for the mornings.

Can I drink Matcha when pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes you can! It is safe to drink in moderation when pregnant or breastfeeding. Our matcha contains about 70-80mg caffeine per serve and it is recommended to keep caffeine below 200mg while pregnant

Having a cup a day is fine but remember there is caffeine in other foods like chocolate and coffee so caffeine can add up. Speak to your healthcare provider for more information!

What is Hojicha Powder? How is it made?

Hojicha powder is a roasted green tea powder, from the same leaves as matcha. The tea leaves are picked, steamed and dried to stop oxidation. The tea leaves, stems and stalks are then roasted and ground up to produce hojicha powder. Hojicha tastes delicious in lattes and desserts as it has hints of roasted, sweet, cocoa flavour. It also contains a healthy amount of nutrients and antioxidants.

How much caffeine does Hojicha have?

A very low amount of approximately 7.7mg per serve. The roasting process eliminates almost all the caffeine so hojicha is perfect for people who are sensitive to caffeine.

How do I store the Matcha or Hojicha once opened?

It is best to store the tea powders in an airtight container (like our resealable pouches) and out of direct sunlight and heat. This will prevent oxidation, help to retain nutritional content and preserve the taste.

It is best to store it in a cool, dry place. If you live in hotter climates, storing in the fridge may be an option but be weary that this can cause moisture damage and tea can also absorb the odours of the fridge.

How long can I keep the Matcha or Hojicha powder once opened?

Once opened, it is best to consume within 1-2 months to prevent oxidation.
